SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Santa Cruz Warriors forward Georges Niang has signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz, the team announced today. Terms of his two-way contract have not been disclosed.
“Georges Niang distinguished himself in Santa Cruz as a team leader, a standout offensive player and a charismatic leader in our community,” said Santa Cruz Warriors General Manager Kent Lacob. “I’m thrilled that Georges earned this well-deserved call-up to the Utah Jazz organization and wish him continued success on the court.”
The 6’6 forward started 26 games with the Santa Cruz Warriors this season, averaging 18.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.15 steals in 33.1 minutes per game with .547/.415/.837 shooting averages. Niang ranks 11th in Santa Cruz history in field goal percentage (54.7%) and 2nd in field goal percentage (.414) among players with at least 100 attempts. Niang was originally signed by the Golden State Warriors as a training camp invite, averaging 4.0 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 9.8 minutes over 4 preseason games.
The 24-year-old Methuen, MA native began his NBA career with the Indiana Pacers, who selected him 50th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. Niang averaged 0.9 points in 4.0 minutes in 23 games with the Pacers, as well as 19.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 6 games with their NBA G League affiliate Fort Wayne Mad Ants. He was a two-time All American at Iowa State University, finishing second in school history in career points (2,228), first in games played (138) and became the first Cyclones player to make the NCAA Tournament all four years.
Niang is the second Santa Cruz Warrior to earn a GATORADE Call-Up this season via two-way contract, as guard Antonius Cleveland signed with the Dallas Mavericks on November 17, 2017. He is the franchise’s 10th NBA Call-Up and the third by the Jazz, who previously signed guards Travis Leslie (March 10, 2013) and Elliott Williams (January 7, 2015).
“I am so excited for Georges to receive his GATORADE Call-Up to the Utah Jazz,” said Santa Cruz Warriors President Chris Murphy. “He has been an absolute pleasure to watch this season and a terrific ambassador for our organization in the community. His impact has been immense in his short time here, and we wish him the best of luck with the Jazz.”
