Six Warriors Score in Double Figures; Second Back-to-Back Tomorrow Night against Westchester
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Santa Cruz Warriors (10-8) fell to the Memphis Hustle (7-9) 123-115 tonight at Kaiser Permanente Arena. This is the first of three meetings between these two teams, with this season being the inaugural year of Memphis basketball in the NBA G League.
Santa Cruz forward Cleanthony Early scored a season-high 24 points (9-15 FG) in 33 minutes of play, with fellow forwardGeorges Niang notching 22 points (9-15) to go along with eight assists and six rebounds. The Warriors shot 56.4% from the field and all five Warriors starters scored in double figures, with Alex Hamilton collecting 18 points, Damian Jones, currently on assignment from Golden State, scoring 10 points on perfect shooting (5-5 FG) and rookie guard Avry Holmes also scoring 10 points (4-6 FG).
Memphis duo Marquis Teague and Omari Johnson led all scorers with 26 points each. Rookie Ivan Rabb, currently on assignment from the Memphis Grizzlies, achieved the only double-double of the night, with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Memphis dominated the glass with a 51-31 rebounding advantage, including 18 offensive rebounds leading to 28 second chance points for the Hustle.
The tightly contested first quarter featured seven ties and three lead changes, with Rabb dominating the action in the paint and in the midrange with 10 points (4-6 FG) and three rebounds. Memphis pulled away and led by as much as 16 thanks to a 22-0 second chance point advantage early in the third quarter. The Warriors pulled within one score with two minutes remaining thanks to an 8-0 run, but Memphis was able to pull away with the win thanks to a clutch three from Durand Scott and Teague’s floor leadership.
Tomorrow night, the Warriors will host the second of a back-to-back series against the Westchester Knicks (tip-off 7:00 p.m.). The first 1,500 fans to arrive at Kaiser Permanente Arena tomorrow night will receive a Stephen Curry Championship Edition Bobblehead.
