SANTA CRUZ, CA – The Santa Cruz Warriors (2-2) secured their second win of the 2017-18 NBA G League season over the visiting Wisconsin Herd (2-1) in front of a sold out crowd at Kaiser Permanente Arena tonight.
Warriors guard Quinn Cook registered a near triple double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in less than 29 minutes. Fellow guard Michael Gbinije, making his first start of the season, closely followed with 21 points while shooting 8-12 from the field and 4-7 from deep.
Wisconsin Herd guard Gary Payton II led all scorers with 29 points and eight rebounds with his Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame father watching from the stands. Guard Xavier Munford collected 18 points while shooting 7-13 from the field and 4-5 from three.
Santa Cruz jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter behind Quinn Cook’s 12 points and four rebounds and would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the night. Mid-way through the second quarter, the Herd pulled within four after Xavier Munford knocked down a 3-point shot at 6:13. Warriors forward Cleanthony Early then led the Warriors to a 23-4 run to close the second, capped off by Cleanthony’s three with 3.8 seconds left in the half.
The Warriors exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Herd 32-13 and scoring 12 buckets off nine assists. Cook led the charge with eight points and five assists, including two three-pointers.
The Warriors will complete their weekend back-to-back tomorrow night when they host the Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off, welcoming back former Head Coach Casey Hill. Santa Cruz defeated Agua Caliente in their first meeting of the 2017-18 NBA G League season on November 3rd, 131-98.
