Santa Cruz Warriors Awarded 2019-20 Nba G League Social Responsibility/Youth Basketball Award For Sea Dub Classics Program

Official Release | August 6, 2020

SANTA CRUZ, CA – The Santa Cruz Warriors were awarded the NBA G League Social Responsibility/Youth Basketball Award for their Sea Dub Classics Program in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, announced by the league today.

The Sea Dub Classics is a community program in Santa Cruz County for citizens 55 and over to experience new activities, lead healthy lives and thrive throughout the entire year. In its inaugural year, the Sea Dub Classics hosted a variety of events to energize fans with new activities to help them live well, with support from the Santa Cruz Warriors staff and associates, Kaiser Permanente and local community partners.

“We are so excited to have our Sea Dub Classics program highlighted in its first year,” said Chris Murphy, Santa Cruz Warriors President. “Kaiser Permanente has been an outstanding partner for so long and this program shows their commitment to all ages of the Santa Cruz community. We are happy to have them on our team.”

The Sea Dub Classics monthly program has continued throughout the offseason, keeping program participants engaged throughout the entirety of the year. In recent months, the Sea Dub Classics have proven their ability to adapt in virtual capacities providing participants with virtual Zumba, virtual chair yoga and a virtual river walk of the San Lorenzo River.

“Kaiser Permanente Santa Cruz County is all about helping improve the total health of our communities,” said Karla Rodriguez Lomax, Public Affairs Director, Kaiser Permanente South Bay and Santa Cruz. “The Sea Dubs Classics was a natural evolution of our partnership; which focuses on providing our community with access to programs to improve their total health.  By offering such activities as Zumba, chair yoga, hiking and more for mature residents and then continuing this programming during the pandemic by bringing it into the comfort of residents homes; its big step towards community health and a win for our community.”

The Santa Cruz Warriors and Kaiser Permanente have been community partners since the Sea Dubs arrived in Santa Cruz in 2012.  Kaiser Permanente is the arena naming rights sponsor of the Santa Cruz Warriors arena (Kaiser Permanente Arena) and is also the community sponsor for the Santa Cruz Warriors Read to Achieve, Math Warriors and Get Fit Programs.

“It has been such a pleasure to be a part of the Sea Dub Classics this year,” said Robin Berkery, owner of Jazzercise of Santa Cruz and Aptos and a Sea Dub Classics Instructor.  “Santa Cruz is already an active and health conscious community, and the Santa Cruz Warriors and Sea Dub Classics do an amazing job at encouraging the 55 and older population to keep moving.”

All 28 NBA G League teams were invited to submit a nomination in each category for awards recognizing excellence for team business and social responsibility, with a committee of league and team executives choosing the winners. Other winners of the 2019-20 Social Responsibility/Youth Basketball Awards included the Long Island Nets and Salt Lake City Stars.
