SANTA CRUZ, CA. – The Santa Cruz Warriors (12-9) ended their six-game winning streak with a 119-106 defeat to the Texas Legends (12-8) Sunday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Jordan Poole, on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, made his Kaiser Permanente Arena debut and scored a professional career-high 31 points on 11-of-23 shooting from the floor while connecting on 5-of-10 3-point attempts. Alen Smailagić, also on assignment from Golden State, posted 17 points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes. Isaiah Reese recorded a new career high with 12 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
The Legends were led by Brandon Fields, who scored 27 points to go along with six rebounds and seven assists. Jaylen Hoard, on a two-way contract with the Portland Trail Blazers and transferred to Texas via the flexible assignment rule, had 22 points and eight rebounds on 9-of-16 shooting.
Santa Cruz got out to a 13-9 lead in the first quarter before the Legends ended the first on an 18-4 run and jumped out to a 36-19 lead in the second quarter on the heels of an extended 27-6 run. Santa Cruz was able to cut the deficit to nine points late in the second quarter before Aric Holman hit a 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds left to give Texas a 59-47 lead heading into halftime.
The Warriors never got closer than 11 points in the second half and trailed 89-77 heading into the fourth quarter. Texas forced two Santa Cruz turnovers leading to two transition buckets in the first 35 seconds of the fourth quarter and the Legends held a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Santa Cruz shot 49 percent from the floor, 35 percent from 3-point territory and 60 percent at the foul line. The Sea Dubs matched a season low with 13 assists and did not have an assist in the first quarter. Texas shot 52 percent from the field, 39 percent from beyond the arc and 78 percent from the free-throw line.
The Warriors now embark on a four-game trip starting in Utah to take on the Salt Lake City Stars, who were the 2019 NBA G League Winter Showcase Champions. The Warriors will return to Kaiser Permanente Arena on Saturday, January 18 for a 7 p.m. tip against the Oklahoma City Blue.
