SANTA CRUZ, CA – The Santa Cruz Warriors (11-8) secured a 106-98 win over the Westchester Knicks (13-6), the top seed in the NBA G League Eastern Conference. With tonight’s win, Santa Cruz snapped a three-game losing streak, their longest skid of the season, and halted Westchester’s four game win streak.
Santa Cruz shot 56.0% from the floor tonight (42-75 FG) facilitated by 30 assists, compared to Westchester’s 35.4% (34-96 FG) shooting with 15 assists. However, Westchester kept the game in reach going into the final frame by taking advantage of easy shots, shooting 22 free throws compared to Santa Cruz’s six and utilizing an 18-5 offensive rebound advantage to create 16 second chance points.
In the fourth quarter, Knicks affiliate player Trey Burke dominated play with 15 points (6-12 FG) and Westchester hit five threes to bring the score to within three points with less than a minute remaining. However, Santa Cruz was able to persevere thanks to stars Quinn Cook and Georges Niang converting 5-6 free throws to end the game.
Cook, who re-joined Santa Cruz this afternoon, led the Warriors with 30 points (11-17 FG) and 5 assists. Golden State Warriors center Damian Jones, currently on assignment in Santa Cruz, scored 20 points to go along with 15 rebounds, six assists and two blocks in less than 35 minutes of action. Niang scored 19 points and collected five rebounds and five assists, his 11th game this season with an 18-5-5 line.
For Westchester, Burke led all scorers with 35 points (14-32 FG), his fourth consecutive game with over 30 points. The Knicks had five players score in double figures, including swingman Billy Garrett and center Adam Woodbury collecting 15 and 12 off the bench, respectively. Knicks two-way center Isaiah Hicks dominated play in the paint, nabbing 16 rebounds, eight of which were on the offensive glass.
The Warriors will be on the road for five of their next six games leading into the NBA G League Showcase, with the team’s next home game on Tuesday, December 26 against the dominant Rio Grande Valley Vipers (tip-off 7:00 p.m.).
