SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Santa Cruz Warriors (9-5) defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce (5-6) 116-95 tonight for the team’s third straight win. The Warriors swept the Skyforce in the team’s first home-and-home series of the season, having previously beaten Sioux Falls 104-84 on Friday, December 1 at South Dakota’s Sanford Pentagon.
Warriors two-way guard Quinn Cook led both teams with 26 points (10-23 FG, 4-8 3FG) and center Damian Jones, currently on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, scored 23 points (10-13 FG) to go along with 16 rebounds, marking his second consecutive game with at least 15 points and 15 rebounds. Santa Cruz had four players with double-doubles for the first time this season, as forwards Cleanthony Early notched 14 points and 14 rebounds and Georges Niang had 15 points and 11 rebounds, with guard Alex Hamilton securing 11 points and dishing 11 helpers. 6’2 guard Avry Holmes established a new career-high tonight with 19 points (7-11 FG) and 6 rebounds.
Sioux Falls forward Erik McCree led the Skyforce with 24 points (9-24 FG, 3-10 3FG) and 10 rebounds, with forward Tony Mitchell collecting 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Denver Nuggets two-way guard Torrey Craig, currently on flex assignment with Sioux Falls, had 16 points with 10 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Warriors fell behind in the first period, the team’s first deficit in nearly nine quarters of action this week, before going on a 10-3 run to close the first half with a 55-52 lead. With the score knotted 59-59 in the third, Santa Cruz pulled away for good with a quarter-ending 28-11 run, thanks Cook’s 11 points (4-8 FG) and two assist and Holmes continuing his hot shooting streak with a 7 point outburst.
The Warriors will travel to Cedar Park, Texas to play a two-game series against the Austin Spurs (8-5), the NBA G League affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs, at the H-E-B Center.
