SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Santa Cruz Warriors (23-24) enjoyed a wire-to-wire win over the Northern Arizona Suns (21-26), 138-126 during the team’s 52nd consecutive sell-out at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Sea Dubs guard Jabari Brown led both teams with a season-high 40 points and seven assists, including 27 in the first half.
Warriors guard Jeremy Pargo had his fourth consecutive double-double with 21 points and 12 assists. Six Warriors players scored in double digits tonight, with centerTrevor Thompson earning a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds), Avry Holmes hit a season-high 20 points off the bench on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and guardMichael Gbinije put up 19 points and six boards.
Three Suns starters finished with over 20 points, with forward Mike Young leading the team with 37 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Guard Josh Grayorchestrated the offense to deliver 28 points, eight assists, and five rebounds and guard Archie Goodwin finished with 24 points and six rebounds on 11-of-19 from the field (57.9 percent). Despite shooting only 9-of-32 from behind the three point line (25.0 percent), Northern Arizona scored 72 points in the paint.
Santa Cruz tipped off the game with a 7-0 run and enjoyed their third straight home game shooting 60.0 percent in the first quarter (15-of-25 FG) to lead 37-25 going into the second. Brown dominated the second with 17 points and 3 three-pointers to give him 27 points in the half, the most by any Santa Cruz Warrior this season in any half. The Warriors led 72-54 at halftime, their most first half points of the season.
Santa Cruz finished the third quarter with 105 points and shot 54.1 percent from the field, 43.3 percent from deep and 92.3 percent from the free throw line. The Suns opened the fourth quarter on a 12-2 run to keep the game competitive, thanks to Mike Young and Gray each scoring 10 points in the period. Holmes chipped in 10 points, his best quarter of the season, with two timely threes to secure the Warriors win.
The Warriors will host the Iowa Wolves on Friday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. PDT. beginning the night with a replay of the final 17.5 seconds of their January 19 game. The team will host their second annual tie-dye Charitable Jersey Night, presented by Awe Sum Organics, with the first 1,500 fans in attendance receiving a Warriors Rally Towel.
